Optical Calcite is known for possessing birefringence, or double refraction, which means it splits light rays causing anything seen through it to appear doubled. It was originally discovered in Iceland and is also known as Iceland Spar. Historical evidence suggests that ancient Vikings used it as ‘sunstone’ to navigate cloudy skies. In modern times it’s been used in WWII sighting equipment for bombardiers and for manufacturing polarizing prisms.
